Is a Free Droid Phone Only Good When Free?

Say you have been given an opportunity to own a free droid phone. That means that you can take home a smart phone, the very Motorola droid phone, without shelling out any amount of money. That is obviously a great deal. You get to have a smart phone for free. Is there any doubt in this case? What if you actually have to pay for your Motorola droid? Will you still feel the same about the product? As with any product, the droid has its weaknesses. Is it weak enough to be considered trash when paid in cash? Here are its weaknesses for analysis:

Small Keyboard

A lot of owners have problems with the small keyboard. They complain about not being able to feel comfortable while typing messages. When in a hurry, this difficulty is further highlighted. However, there are also droid phone owners who can attest that the keyboard is a minimal problem that can be resolved with practice.

Too Few Applications

It is normal for a smart phone to be compared to other smart phones.

The Motorola droid phone has been compared with other smart phones in terms of specifications and applications. Some owners complain that the droid phone does not have as many applications as other smart phones. Because of this, the droid is considered unsatisfying. Motorola did express its interest and future plans in terms of adding more useful applications.

Grainy Images

There are times when the droid phone produces grainy images. The camera itself has a 5-megapixel capability. So, the camera itself should be able to produce high quality images, at least for a mobile phone. The grainy images may be a result of something else in the system. Still, people have noticed that the droid does produce grainy images from time to time. It would be a shame if this happens just when you thought you got that perfect shot.

Too Many Steps

A good phone must be user-friendly. The Motorola droid phone is ok but it does require a lot of steps just so the user can call. There are no easy-to-learn and easy-to-deal with shortcuts that would be very handy when it comes to emergencies.

Few Supported Formats

There are already complains about the fact that the Motorola droid contains few applications. It turns out that the droid also supports few video formats. This is really not a good thing because smart phones are supposed to be able to play a lot of video formats. How else can you enjoy a video clip that you have just been sent by a friend? Of course, the Motorola droid boasts of DVD quality video capture. For people who are content to watch videos made through the droid phone itself would be happy enough.

Win a free droid phone and you will experience the downsides of the Motorola droid with fewer frustrations that those of people who have bought the phone. Still, a free droid phone can be very frustrating if the weaknesses are piling up. What is good about the Motorola situation is that the phone also offers several perks. The company is also bent on improving the phone.

How to Choose the Right Droid Phone For You

There is a large array of Droid phones to select from, therefore it is crucial to compare Droid phones before you make a selection.  If you select the wrong model it may not suit your specific needs.  There are Android based cell phones that are optimized to run the full spectrum for use by business people who travel internationally, to those who use a lot of social media, as well as many other uses.  You do not want to get a phone that is optimized for a business person if you are going to be using the phone a lot for text messaging, the phone’s set up may not be convenient for your usage and it turn you will end up being unsatisfied with your Droid.

When you compare Droid phones the first aspect you have a check is what cell phone provider the phone is with.  The quality of service and coverage can vary greatly from carrier to carrier.  Although a phone may be optimized for your usage, and have many features that you like, if you choose a carrier with poor coverage you may not be happy with potential dropped calls, areas with no service, and slow downloads.  An internet search of coverage maps of each carrier in your area can greatly aid in this first step.

The size of the phone is also very important.  Android based phones come in all different shapes and sizes.  For someone who is going to be putting their phone in their pocket most of the time they may want a smaller phone.  In contrast, if the owner of the phone is going to be carrying the phone in their purse then the size of the phone may not be a great concern when evaluating a Droid phone to purchase.

Next you will want to look at the speed of the processor in the phone, this may be the most important aspect when you compare Droid phones.  Typically the top of the line Droid models will have the most efficient processors, while some of the mid-range and lower Droid models will not have these.  The speed of the processor will determine download speeds and how fast the phone can move through different programs and apps.

Timing your purchase of the Droid device is crucial as well.  With so many Droid models on so many carriers it is a good idea to see what devices are going to be released in the next couple months.  If there is an older model that you like, it is wise to check the new models that will be released soon(there are new Droid phones being released all the time).  Smart phone technology is constantly advancing and there may be a new Droid device that suits your needs even better than any current phones on the market.

Richard McCormick has been evaluating and writing about the Androd platform since the original Droid was released.
